NFC Supports Safety Stand-Down: May 1-5, 2023

Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 378 of the 986 construction fatalities recorded in 2021 (BLS data). Those deaths were preventable. OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

What Is a Safety Stand-Down?

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on "Fall Hazards" and reinforcing the importance of "Fall Prevention".

Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a Toolbox Talk or another safety activity such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards. Managers are encouraged to plan stand-down events the week of May 1-5, 2023. A Stand-Down could be as simple as a 15-minute toolbox talk or several hours of training over the course of the week.

The Stand-Down is free and you do not have to register to participate. Simply hold a Stand-Down with your employees during the week of May 1-5, 2023. Then tell OSHA about your Stand-Down and download a certificate of participation after your Stand-Down event. Also share your Stand-Down story on social media, with the hashtag: #StandDown4Safety. 

NFC 2023 Safety Stand-Down Contest

To support the 2023 National Safety Stand-Down, we encourage our ANY framer to participate in the NFC Stand-Down Contest.

Here is how your team can participate:

• Download the following 5 FrameSAFE Fall Protection Toolbox Talks
  • Extension Ladders
  • General Guidelines for Risk Assessment
  • Step Ladders
  • Guardrails - Examples
  • Putting on a Body Harness
• At a minimum, you must present and sign-off on all 5 Toolbox Talks during the week of May 1-5, 2023.
• Take pictures of any and all of your stand-down activities; extra credit for creative (but safe) photos!
• Submit your signed toolbox talks and photos to NFC staff by May 19, 2023.

Photos will be reviewed and judged by the NFC Steering Committee and the most creative (but safe) photo will be awarded the Prize Package.
