Last week, SBCA published an informational update on the Digital QC program. The document included quick tips on multiple new functions available through the software platform, including updates to the Corrected Action function, entering daily setup hours, and performing weekly manager review sign offs.

In addition, the memo includes guidance on eased edge (EE) lumber after a component manufacturer (CM) contacted SBCA regarding receipt of 1/4” EE lumber. Typically, EE lumber is 1/8”, and the removal of additional edge material may have an overall effect on the engineering and quality of finished components. SBCA recommends CM purchasing teams check EE depths at the time of receipt and QC inspectors watch for this issue, as well.

Finally, the memo reviews the common practice of cross-cutting stress-graded lumber into shorter pieces. As a reminder, the shortened pieces are typically assumed to maintain the same grade and design properties/design values assigned to the original piece. The memo goes on to review specific provisions of the 2014 and 2022 editions of ANSI/TPI 1, that provide guidance to CMs, and QC inspectors, on how to properly address traceability throughout the manufacturing process.
