On August 14, 2025, members of the SBCA chapter, Iowa Component Manufacturers Association (ICMA), met with the Eastern Iowa Construction Code Council (EICCC) at the City of Cedar Rapids City Services Center. This meeting brought together 23 Building Officials from eastern Iowa in addition to ICMA members, to engage in a focused discussion on structural building components and proper installation techniques.
A handful of ICMA members attended the EICCC’s morning meeting, which was followed with a presentation by Sean Shields, SBCA Director of Marketing, and ICMA’s Tim Noonan. They delivered a detailed presentation on the updated Building Component Safety Information Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Structural Building Components (BCSI-2025).
Attendees were actively engaged, asking thoughtful questions as Sean and Tim explained key changes to the guide, providing information on best practices when handling, installing, restraining and bracing structural building components. The presentation concluded with an open Q&A session that covered a variety of topics on trusses. This included discussion of snow load increases expected with the upcoming adoption of the 2024 I-Codes and how those changes may affect the design and overall truss packages for a typical home. The strong participation underscored the value of fostering open dialogue between component manufacturers and code officials and others in the industry.
This event highlights ICMA’s proactive role in educating others in the industry and reinforcing the value of offsite methods, such as building with trusses and wall panels. By engaging directly with building officials, ICMA is helping to build confidence in structural building components, support safe jobsite practices, form collaborative relationships in the greater construction industry, and pave the way for greater adoption of componentized framing.
As ICMA demonstrated in Cedar Rapids, strengthening relationships through education not only benefits component manufacturers but also helps ensure safer, more efficient construction practices for the entire industry.
SBCA is committed to helping educate code officials and others in the industry across the country. By providing educational resources and knowledgeable presenters, SBCA is ready to help members and chapters host similar sessions with code officials and other important stakeholders.
