A Valuable Hub of Industry Resources
A Valuable Hub of Industry Resources
LAST YEAR, SBCA QUIETLY BUILT ONE OF THE most robust collections of technical guidance and industry insights available to component manufacturers and the broader construction community. From code interpretations and engineering research to installation guidance and best practices developed through real-world experience, SBCA’s technical resources concerning structural building components have long been trusted by professionals across the industry. Today, all of that knowledge lives in one centralized, easy-to-use location: the SBCA Knowledge Center.
Created to provide a single destination for credible, practical, and timely information, the SBCA Knowledge Center is a free, publicly accessible digital hub designed to make it easier than ever to find the tools and insights needed to design, manufacture, inspect, and install and brace structural building components with confidence.
A Comprehensive Technical Library Built for the Industry
At its core, the SBCA Knowledge Center is an extensive library of more than 150 downloadable resources focused on structural building components and the greater construction industry. The collection includes research reports, white papers, technical guidance documents, presentations, videos, and other educational materials that support sound decision-making throughout the structural framing process.
These resources are invaluable to a wide range of professionals, including building designers, truss designers, component manufacturers, truss installers, building inspectors, and code officials. Whether the goal is improving plan clarity, resolving jobsite questions, or navigating evolving code requirements, the SBCA Knowledge Center offers practical, industry-specific answers grounded in engineering principles.
“The SBCA Knowledge Center was created to give component manufacturers, building designers, framers, and building inspectors access to a digital library of technical resources specific to our industry,” says Greg Greenlee, P.E., SBCA’s Interim Co-Executive Director and Technical Director. “This library contains best practices and sound technical guidance based on engineering principles and the industry’s collective experience in the field.”

Organized for Clarity and Usability
To make navigation intuitive and efficient, the Knowledge Center’s technical documents are organized into six primary categories, each designed to serve a specific purpose:
• Code Summary Reports (CSR####) summarize relevant provisions in building codes and reference standards to explain specific topics.
• Technical Notes (TN####) provide detailed explanations of technical issues encountered in design, manufacturing, and construction.
• Test Summary Reports (TSR####) distill the findings of laboratory and field testing into practical takeaways.
• Design Guidance (DG####) offers focused design information for specific applications or conditions.
• Construction Guidance (CG####) delivers prescriptive installation details and best practices for use in the field.
• White Papers (WP####) present SBCA’s interpretation of and position on important industry-related topics.
This structured approach allows users to quickly identify the type of information they need, whether they are looking for code-compliant solutions, detailed technical explanations, or jobsite-ready installation guidance.
A Rigorous Review Process That Can Be Trusted
What truly sets the SBCA Knowledge Center apart is the rigor behind every document it contains. Each resource is reviewed and scrutinized by the members of the SBCA Engineering & Technical Committee (E&T Committee), a group of experienced professionals who bring deep technical expertise and practical perspective to the process.
“Each document within the SBCA Knowledge Center is reviewed and scrutinized by the members of the SBCA Engineering & Technical Committee,” says Howard Gauger, Chair of the committee. “Everything is reviewed on a three-year cycle to coincide with the building code, and we also consult with the members of TPI’s Technical Advisory Committee when a document contains references to the ANSI/TPI 1 Standard.”
This disciplined review cycle ensures that the SBCA Knowledge Center remains current, accurate, and aligned with the latest code editions, giving users confidence that the guidance they find in each document reflects today’s regulatory and technical landscape.
Improving Communication and Reducing Friction in the Field
Beyond technical accuracy, the SBCA Knowledge Center plays a critical role in improving communication across the construction process. Clearer plan sets, better-defined expectations, and shared technical references all help reduce misunderstandings and potentially costly rework.
“The documents in the SBCA Knowledge Center are intended to help building designers more clearly communicate what they want and how they want it done,” says Ed Robbins, P.E., E&T Committee Member. “They’re valuable references for achieving clearer plan sets and fewer questions in the field.”
When questions do arise, the SBCA Knowledge Center can often provide answers before issues escalate or mistakes are made. “When questions come up in the field—from truss uplift to partition separation—the SBCA Knowledge Center is often the first place I point contractors and code officials,” Ed adds. “It provides a strong baseline of industry standards and best practices, and many of the answers to the questions I get every day are already there.”
Helping the Industry Evolve with Confidence As buildings become more complex and design loads and code requirements continue to evolve, the need for reliable, well-vetted technical guidance continues to grow. The SBCA Knowledge Center helps industry professionals adapt to these changes by explaining not only what the code requires, but also why those requirements matter and, often, what they mean.
“As building complexity, design loads, and code requirements have changed, SBCA’s Knowledge Center can help building designers and component manufacturers evolve with them,” concludes Ed. “These documents reflect decades of real-world experience and engineering insight, making them a trusted resource for understanding not just what the code says, but why it matters.”

A Shared Resource for Building Better
By bringing decades of knowledge into one accessible platform, SBCA’s Knowledge Center seeks to strengthen collaboration throughout the industry, improve plan consistency and jobsite execution, and elevate structural framing with manufacturing components across the industry.
For anyone involved in the design, manufacture, or installation of structural building components, the SBCA Knowledge Center is more than a library—it’s a foundational resource for designing and building better.
