SBCA’s “Big Green House” Returns to the National Mall for HUD’s 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase

3,000-Square-Foot Duplex Demonstrates How American-Made  
Structural Building Components Can Help Build Homes More Efficiently

Washington, D.C. – September 22, 2026 – The “Big Green House” is back on the National Mall. The Structural Building Components Association (SBCA) is again showcasing its 3,000-square-foot, two-story duplex in Washington, D.C., for the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s (HUD) 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase (IHS), taking place September 22–24 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. 

Now standing on the National Mall, the house gives policymakers, congressional members and staff, housing professionals, media, and the public an opportunity to walk through a full-scale structure and see firsthand how structural building components such as roof trusses, floor trusses, and wall panels are used to frame homes. 

This year’s IHS theme, “Made in America,” highlights American manufacturing, innovation, and building solutions that can help expand housing supply and make homeownership more attainable. For SBCA, the theme closely reflects an industry that is already manufacturing structural building components in communities across the country. 

“The ‘Big Green House’ gives us an opportunity to move beyond talking about what structural building components can do and actually show it,” says Sean Shields, SBCA Director of Strategic Partnerships. “Roof trusses, floor trusses, and wall panels are being manufactured in communities across the country every day. They provide an efficient, scalable building solution that can help us build more homes, and we are proud to bring that story to the National Mall alongside HUD and so many others working to address our country’s housing needs.” 

Structural building components are manufactured offsite in a controlled environment and delivered to the jobsite ready for installation. This approach can help builders use labor, materials, and construction time more efficiently while providing greater predictability in the framing process. 

SBCA's “Big Green House” builds at the Innovative Housing Showcase have demonstrated just how quickly componentized framing can come together, with the structure framed in as little as 8–12 hours. Depending on the project and jobsite conditions, using components can significantly shorten the framing process compared to traditional stick framing. 

With more than 1,300 component manufacturing locations across the United States, the infrastructure to manufacture and deliver these building systems is already in place. Components are used in projects ranging from single-family homes to multi-family construction, making them an efficient and scaled part of the nation’s housing supply. 

Throughout the Showcase, visitors to the "Big Green House" can explore the structure, see components and building systems up close, and speak directly with SBCA staff and industry professionals about how component manufacturing supports the construction process and housing industry.  

SBCA will also participate in the Showcase’s educational programming. On Wednesday, September 23 at 2pm Eastern Time, Sean Shields, SBCA Director of Strategic Partnerships, will speak as a panelist with NAHB’s Bill Owens called “Meeting Demand: Expanding Housing Supply.”  

The 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase is free and open to the public on the National Mall between 7th and 12th Streets in Washington, D.C.

Tuesday, September 22: 12:30–6:00 pm 
Wednesday, September 23: 12:00–6:00 pm 
Thursday, September 24: 12:00–4:00 pm
