Putting Safety Into Practice

Framing Today,

Practical Programs and Resources Helping Framers Build Safer Jobsites

Safety is more than a regulatory requirement in construction; it’s the foundation that allows crews to perform their work with confidence, and return home to their families at the end of each day. In the framing industry, where the work is physically demanding, often performed at heights, and involves heavy complex materials, safety is not optional. It is essential. That’s why the National Framers Council (NFC) has made safety one of its top priorities.

Through initiatives like participation in OSHA’s Safety Stand-Down and Safe + Sound Week, the NFC is helping to build awareness, encourage participation, and create a culture in which safety becomes second nature. These programs not only remind framing companies and their crews of the importance of safety, but they also provide practical tools and resources that can be used every day on the jobsite.

Safety Stand-Down

The Safety Stand-Down is an annual event that provides framing companies with the opportunity to pause normal operations and dedicate focused time to discussing safety with their teams. Typically held in the spring, the Stand-Down mirrors OSHA’s national campaign, but tailors its focus to issues unique to framers.

During a Stand-Down, work is intentionally stopped so crews can gather for discussions, training, and demonstrations on topics like fall protection, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of trusses and lumber, tool safety, and identifying hazards that cause accidents.

The value of the Stand-Down is two-fold:

  1. Knowledge Transfer: Workers receive up-to-date, relevant information in a format they can immediately apply on the jobsite.
  2. Cultural Message: Stopping production to focus on safety sends a clear signal that leadership values safety as much as productivity.

The message taken from stopping production is powerful. It reinforces that safety is a shared responsibility, not just a box to check for compliance.

Another important aspect of the Stand-Down is its connection this program has to FrameSAFE, the NFC’s comprehensive safety manual designed specifically for framing contractors. FrameSAFE provides step-by-step guidance, templates, and resources that make it easier for companies to implement consistent safety practices. By using FrameSAFE in conjunction with the Stand-Down, framers can make the event more meaningful and actionable.

Safe + Sound Week

In addition to the Stand-Down, the NFC also participates in Safe + Sound Week, a nationwide initiative promoted by OSHA, NIOSH, and other safety organizations. Safe + Sound Week usually takes place in August and highlights the importance of implementing a comprehensive workplace safety and health program.

This year, the NFC recognized Safe + Sound week with the theme “Stairway to Success,” which focused on the steps companies can take to build a culture of safety that ensures every worker goes home safe. From improving compliance and delivering clear, consistent safety messages to engaging teams in meaningful training, each step reinforces the foundation for safer jobsites.

To make participation simple and impactful, NFC developed a practical, easy to follow presentation tailored specifically for framers. The presentation covered the following:

  • Safety culture and leadership
  • Illness and injury prevention strategies
  • Toolbox talks and site-specific safety planning
  • Fall protection, PPE, and compliance tips

Member companies were encouraged to download and use the presentation during the week, whether in a shop, at a plant, or at an active jobsite. These resources made it easier for leaders to facilitate discussions, strengthen daily safety practices, and involve crews in shaping a strong safety culture.

In addition, NFC directed members to OSHA’s official Safe + Sound Week website for further resources and promoted the importance of recognizing safety as a core value.

Safety Matters

Safety isn’t just an event or a campaign; it’s an ongoing practice that makes the framing industry stronger. Safety initiatives like the Safety Stand-Down and Safe + Sound Week provide practical tools and reminders that help companies keep safety front and center throughout the year.

By participating, framers show their teams and their communities that they value safe jobsites and healthy workers. These efforts reduce risks, improve productivity, and build confidence across the industry.

The NFC will continue to support members with resources like FrameSAFE and encourage participation in national safety efforts. With steady attention and shared commitment, safety becomes less about checking boxes and more about creating workplaces where people can do their best work and go home safe every day.
